Informed Consent

I set up this blog because I truly believe that if every woman had true informed consent that they would make different choices.  This was not designed to convince women to have an unmedicated birth or even a homebirth(althought I will talk about that also) but so that women can make true informed decisions.  Rather than sitting back and letting the Dr. have control of our bodies and our births we need to stand up for our babies and our bodies and be the ones in control.

Women come to me all the time and tell me it was a good thing I was in the hospital because my baby/I would have died.  More often than not I can trace that true emergency back to something that was unneccesarily done to them during labor or before.  That is my first goal in writing.  To help women truely understand what it is they are consenting to.

My second goal is to get women to do one little thing and that is to change their vocabulary from "My Doctor did...."  to "After my husband and I discussed it and had a chance to do some research I let my Doctor......".  Too many women have no idea how they ended up with a CSection after that routine induction.   Too many women will tell you it was all a blur "One minute we were laughing and talking and the next minute I was being rushed into the surgical room for a CSection. "

My third goal is to get women to understand and realize the potential we all have in us to be strong.  I would like more women to stop saying "I have nothing to prove" "I'm not strong enough" "I can't stand pain" "I want to enjoy my birth"  I would like to hear more women say "I want something more out of my births" "This isn't just about a healthy baby, this is about the best birthing experience I can create".

I could go on forever but if I do I wouldn't have anything to write!  Stay tuned for more!
